FAO And SEED Partnership Launches SDG Agrifood Accelerator Programme

Recently a virtual meeting was held at FAO’s headquarters where 12 innovators across the globe showcased their contribution towards the UN’s Development Sustainable Goals (SDGs). The Food And Agriculture Organisation (FAO) And SEED partnership has recently launched the SDG Agrifood Accelerator Programme which is a robust instrument designed to help agrifood system startups to develop their businesses attaining also to the local context. 

Amongst hundreds, small and medium-sized enterprises selected (SMEs) which comprised portfolios consisting Adelphi - hosted SEED Partnership. Therefore they will be supported by this launched program in three domains, which include financial readiness, innovation potential, and market reach.

This program will provide beneficial help in providing assistance towards the development of business, in creating good investment plans as well as expert advice on different approaches towards financiers and how to shift towards digitalization.

“Together with SEED we want to explore how the innovators involved can make a difference in the transformation of agrifood systems locally as we work towards achieving the SDGs globally,” said Stefanos Fotiou, Director of FAO’s Office of Sustainability Development Goal.

There should be alternative approaches and innovative solutions to the rising challenges like the increased food demand,  to reduce the poverty, and meet the demands of the growing population at the national and global levels. Therefore this program consisting of 17 SDGs addresses these issues, to meet the targeted goals comprising no poverty and zero hunger to attain good health.

SEED Executive Director, Arab Hoballah said, “The caliber of the twelve selected SDG Agrifood Innovators is inspiring, leading by example for replication and acceleration of change. We are excited to further their SDG contributions with FAO through our joint program. We strongly encourage policymakers and financers to take a closer look at these innovative SMEs as they have the potential to become key partners in transforming global food systems in the transition to circularity and sustainability.”

The 12 SMEs which has joined this program have also been operating and contributing across eight countries in Africa and Asia. They have been the pioneering solution that can transform the dimension of agrifood systems. They have attained to shift and transform the lives of vulnerable individuals and the local communities.

In Thailand, Listenfield applies scientific principles and climate data in order to provide precision farming solutions that cut field operation costs and provide a detailed outlook for yield prediction.

 Amaati Group, which empowers rural Ghanaian women by farming indigenous Fonio grains. This social enterprise works with over 2,000 farmers and dries, de-husks, stores, packages, and also markets Fonio cereal products for household consumption.

During the meeting, it was also announced that the results of this program will be shared during the Global UN Food System Stocktaking Moment that will certainly be held in Rome, Italy at FAO premises dated 24 to 26 July 2023.
