Millet cultivation is gaining attention globally for its numerous benefits, including drought resistance, reduced water requirements, and nutritional richness. By introducing millets into their farming practices, local farmers in Kuttanad can not only improve crop yield but also contribute to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural ecosystem.
A one-day training program on millet cultivation is set to take place at Krishi Bhavan Hall in Muttar, Kuttanad on Thursday, offering local farmers an opportunity to enhance their farming skills and embrace sustainable agriculture. The event, which is scheduled to commence at 10:30 a.m., will be inaugurated by Muttar grama panchayat president, Suramya K.
This educational initiative is a collaborative effort between the Initiative for Ecosystem-based Livelihood Enhancement (IELE), Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), and Muttar Krishi Bhavan, in conjunction with the Kerala Millets Mission Alappuzha District Committee.
The training session, titled "Enhancing the resilience of livelihoods with millets: An initiative for farmers of Kuttanad," will be led by Ali Chullu, the president of the Kerala Millets Mission Alappuzha District Committee. This program aims to equip local farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully cultivate millets, which are known for their resilience and nutritional value.
In addition to the training program, an exciting opportunity for hands-on learning is on the horizon. Experimental millet cultivation, conducted under the guidance of IELE and ATREE, will be carried out on a small farm during the upcoming 'puncha' (first) crop season. This practical approach will allow farmers to apply what they have learned in a real-world setting, fostering a deeper understanding of millet cultivation techniques.
