Tomar Proposes Plan To Boost Food Grain Production During Zaid Season

On Monday, state government representatives and the minister of agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar discussed a plan to boost productivity and food grain output during the upcoming zaid season, which starts in March.

The three growing seasons of the nation are kharif, rabi, and zaid. Between March and May, when zaid crops, are seeded.

Tomar said India is currently in a very good position in terms of food grain production, but the nation still needs to scale up the production to successfully fulfill the global supply-demand gap, according to an official statement. Tomar was speaking at this year's virtual national conference on zaid crops.

The administration has been concentrating on expanding foodgrain output during zaid season and holding national conferences to develop a strategy after speaking with states for the past four years.

While securing the availability of essential inputs and promoting the implementation of cutting-edge technology to improve the yield and productivity of the summer crops, the conference assessed crop-wise prospects for the zaid season in cooperation with state governments.

Manoj Ahuja, the Secretary for Agriculture, said that "during the past few years, more land has been planted with zaid crops. In 2021–2022, the area increased from 72.69 lakh hectares to 76.41 lakh hectares."

In addition to productivity challenges, he urged states to consider value chain development, a high temperature-induced decline in wheat output, and climate change.

Arun Singhal, the Secretary for Fertilizers, discussed the numerous measures the government has taken to guarantee a timely supply of fertilizers.

He added that "More fertilizer will be provided at full cost to prevent the diversion of subsidized fertilizers to other uses."

A pilot study is now being conducted in one district of each state to determine fertilizer requirements based on the suggestion of the soil health card.

To lessen reliance on imports, he emphasized the use of organic manures and nano fertilizers.

Himanshu Pathak, Director General of the ICAR, emphasized the significance of implementing climate-resilient practices.
