In a recent report released by the Tea Board, India's tea production saw a modest increase of 6.2% in July 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year. The nation, known for its rich tea culture, recorded a total production of 165.01 million kilograms, up from 155.29 million kilograms during the corresponding period in 2022.

According to the latest data, North India played a significant role in driving this growth, with tea production reaching 143.05 million kilograms in July 2023, compared to 135.77 million kilograms in July 2022. Both Assam and West Bengal, two prominent tea-producing states in North India, contributed to the increased production volumes.

In the southern regions of the country, tea production also showed a slight uptick. South India produced 21.95 million kilograms of tea in July 2023, up from 19.52 million kilograms during the same period in the previous year.

One notable highlight from the report is the growing role of small tea growers (STGs) in the industry. In July 2023, STGs accounted for 50.9% of the total tea production, compared to 50.2% during the same month in 2022. This increase signifies the growing influence of these smaller, often independent tea producers in the Indian tea market.

However, the report also noted a decline in the production of the premium Darjeeling variety, which is renowned for its unique flavor and high-quality leaves. Darjeeling tea production dipped to one million kilograms in July 2023, down from 1.04 million kilograms in the same period the previous year.

Despite this decline in the Darjeeling variety, the overall growth in India's tea production is a positive sign for the nation's tea industry. With tea being an integral part of India's culture and economy, this increase in production could potentially benefit both domestic and international tea enthusiasts.

Tea lovers and industry experts will be keeping a close watch on the trends in India's tea production as the year progresses, anticipating the potential impact on tea prices and export opportunities.
