PAU Set to Recognize Visionary Farmers for Agricultural Excellence at Kisan Mela on September 14th

To acknowledge and inspire the progressive farmers of Punjab for their remarkable contributions to agriculture and allied occupations, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is gearing up to present five prestigious awards during the upcoming Kisan Mela on September 14.

These awards include plaques, citations, cash prizes, and shawls that will be awarded to the four innovative farmers and one remarkable farm woman from Punjab.

One of the honorees, Sardar Paramjit Singh, hailing from the village of Bukan Wekhey Nagar in Faridkot district, will receive the "Parvasi Bharti Award" for his exceptional achievements in crop diversification.

Singh practices scientific farming on 35 acres of land, demonstrating his innovation by cultivating vegetables, jamun, plum, malta, and other fruits. His eco-conscious approach includes water-saving techniques, sustainable paddy straw management, and rainwater harvesting. Furthermore, he engages in dairy farming, beekeeping, and successful self-marketing.

Another deserving recipient, 50-year-old Sardar Narinder Singh Tiwana from the village of Ditupur in Patiala district, will be honored with the "Sardar Dalip Singh Dhaliwal Memorial Award" for his unwavering commitment to environmental preservation, having refrained from stubble burning since 2007.

 He took up agriculture after completing his schooling, practices organic farming techniques and grows sugarcane, turmeric, sarson, vegetables, and pulses on his 3-acre farm. He diligently follows PAU recommendations and employs modern farming machinery for efficient cultivation.

Sardar Amrit Singh, a resident of village Dhaneta in Patiala district, will be celebrated with the "Sardar Ujjagar Singh Dhaliwal Memorial Award" for his exceptional work in vegetable cultivation. With 25 years of experience, Mr. Singh attributes his success to the guidance provided by PAU's Farm Advisory Service Centre in Patiala. He cultivates a variety of vegetables during different seasons and actively engages in polyhouse cultivation, utilizing vermicompost and cocopeat for nursery raising.

Sardar Sukhpal Singh, a small farmer from Mauje Khurd village in Mansa district, will be granted the "Sardar Surjit Singh Dhillon Award" for his outstanding contributions to horticulture. Rather than being discouraged by limited profits from the conventional wheat-paddy rotation on his 2.5-acre farm, the 30-year-old farmer chose to broaden his crop variety. He successfully raises healthy vegetable nurseries, practices beekeeping with 50 bee boxes, and sells sugarcane juice. His crop selection includes a wide range of vegetables for both summer and winter seasons.

Lastly, 48-year-old Bibi Gurbir Kaur, residing in Jhandewala, Budh Singh Wala village, Moga district, will be honored with the "Sardarni Jagbir Kaur Memorial Award." She has emerged as an inspiration in agriculture and allied enterprises.

Managing 25 acres of ancestral land and 10 acres on lease, Bibi Gurbir Kaur has gained recognition for her crop residue management and innovative contributions, such as modifications to the rotavator and the development of Smart Seeder technology. Furthermore, she possesses 35 cows and buffaloes, extending her agricultural pursuits into the dairy production sector.

Her work has been acknowledged by the Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute and Union Agriculture Minister NS Tomar.
