NSO Report: Crop Share in Agri and Allied Sectors' Output Drops 7.5% in Past Decade

According to the NSO's report titled 'State-wise and Item-wise Value of Output from Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing,' the share of the crops sub-sector in the overall agriculture and allied sectors has declined from 62.4% in 2011-12 to 54.9% in 2020-21.

According to a recent report by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the gross value of the output of agriculture and allied sectors has undergone a significant shift in the past decade. Specifically, there has been a decline of 7.5 percentage points in the share of crops, while the share of livestock has increased by 5 percentage points during the same period.

According to the NSO's report titled 'State-wise and Item-wise Value of Output from Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing,' the share of the crops sub-sector in the overall agriculture and allied sectors has declined from 62.4% in 2011-12 to 54.9% in 2020-21.

The percentage of the livestock sub-sector within the agriculture and allied sectors has risen from 25.57% in 2011-21 to 30.58% in 2020-21.

The agriculture and allied sectors are made up of four distinct categories: crop, livestock, forestry & logging, and fishing & aquaculture. There has been a slight increase in the proportion of both forestry & logging and fishing & aquaculture. Forestry & logging's contribution has risen from 7.8% in 2011-12 to 8.42% in 2020-21, while fishing & aquaculture's contribution has increased from 4.19% to 6.08% during the same period.

The report indicates that the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing sector (excluding irrigation) generated a gross output value of Rs 26.12 lakh crore in the year 2020-21, which is a substantial increase from the Rs 19.08 lakh crore value recorded in 2011-12, when adjusted for constant prices of that year.

In the year 2020-21, the agriculture, forestry, and fishing sector in India received significant contributions from three states, namely Uttar Pradesh with Rs 3.11 lakh crore, Maharashtra with Rs 2.46 lakh crore, and Rajasthan with Rs 2.36 lakh crore, making them the top contributors in the country's gross value for this sector.
