Indian Army To Organize A ‘Station Millet Festival’ To Raise Awareness About The Crop
Millets have been a part of Indian cuisine for centuries and are known for their high nutritional value, low glycemic index, and gluten-free properties. Millets are also an eco-friendly crop as they require less water and fertilizers compared to other grains.
The Northern Command of the Indian Army is planning to organize a ‘Station Millet Festival’ in Jammu and Kashmir to raise awareness about the benefits of millets in the diet. The festival will be organized soon as part of the command's ‘Mission Millet’ campaign, which was initiated with an awareness workshop on millets conducted in collaboration with Jammu University.
The workshop was presided over by Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, Chief of Staff, Headquarters Northern Command. The Northern Command is planning various events as part of the ‘Mission Millet’ campaign, such as essay, quiz, and slogan competitions at the school level and cooking competitions at the unit level. The command believes that millets are not only a nutritious grain but also a reminder of India's rich agricultural heritage.
The spokesperson stated that the year 2023 has been declared the ‘International Year of Millets’ to harness the untapped potential of millets for food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. The Northern Command has undertaken a noble initiative to raise awareness among all ranks and families about the benefits of including millet in the diet.
Millets have been a part of Indian cuisine for centuries and are known for their high nutritional value, low glycemic index, and gluten-free properties. Millets are also an eco-friendly crop as they require less water and fertilizers compared to other grains. However, with the advent of modern food processing and marketing techniques, millets have lost their popularity, and people have shifted to more refined and processed grains.
The Northern Command's initiative to promote millets is a commendable effort to revive the use of these nutritious grains in the daily diet. It is hoped that the ‘Station Millet Festival’ and other events under the ‘Mission Millet’ campaign will create awareness about the health benefits of millet and encourage people to incorporate them into their regular diet.
