Himachal Pradesh Unveils Budget 2024, Focused on Empowering Agriculture

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu unveiled a Rs 58,444 crore budget for 2024-25, with a key emphasis on agriculture and environmental sustainability. The budget includes initiatives such as the "Bhed Bakri Protsahan Yojna" scheme with the determination to make the state a "green state" by March 2026.

Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, presented a budget of Rs 58,444 crore for the year 2024-25, prioritizing agriculture and environmental sustainability. This budget marks Sukhu's second term as Finance Minister and reflects his vision for a greener state.

Agriculture received a significant boost with an allocation of Rs 582 crore. One of the key highlights was the launch of the Rs 10 crore "Bhed Bakri Protsahan Yojna" scheme aimed at supporting sheep and goat rearing, a vital source of income for many rural communities. The budget also announced an increase in the daily wages of MGNREGA workers from Rs 240 to Rs 300, directly impacting rural livelihoods.

Environmental sustainability was another major focus of the budget. Sukhu outlined his ambitious goal of making Himachal Pradesh a "green state" by March 2026. This initiative will involve various measures, including promoting afforestation and renewable energy sources.

Recognizing the critical role of farmers, the budget announced an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for both cow and buffalo milk. The MSP for cow milk increased from Rs 38 to Rs 45 per litre, while buffalo milk saw a jump from Rs 38 to Rs 55 per litre. Additionally, Rs 150 crore was allocated to strengthen milk procurement and processing infrastructure, further supporting the dairy industry.

While acknowledging the Rs 87,788 crore debt inherited from the previous government, Sukhu outlined a plan to improve financial management. He estimated a total revenue loss of Rs 4,514 crore, with a focus on bridging the gap through efficient spending and increased revenue generation.

The budget announcement was met with cautious optimism. While some lauded the focus on agriculture and environmental initiatives, others called for more details on specific implementation plans. Overall, the budget lays out a roadmap for a greener and prosperous Himachal Pradesh, with a focus on empowering farmers, strengthening rural communities, and ensuring sustainable development.
