Gram Unnati, an agricultural value chain company based in India, has joined hands with Bayer, a global agricultural science company, in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting spring maize cultivation in six districts of western Uttar Pradesh.

The MoU encompasses the districts of Amroha, Bareilly, Bulandshahr, Moradabad, Rampur, and Sambhal, where over 100,000 farmers stand to benefit from this partnership between Gram Unnati and Bayer CropScience.

Under the terms of the agreement, farmers will gain access to timely crop advisory services, the transfer of good agricultural practices, and premium products offered by Bayer. Additionally, they will receive the necessary support to establish model farms. Gram Unnati will play a crucial role in facilitating farmer mobilization and ensuring market linkages.

The ultimate objective of the MoU is to replicate the successful promotion of spring maize cultivation that Gram Unnati and Bayer have previously achieved in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand. This initiative proved highly beneficial, significantly improving farmers' incomes and conserving thousands of liters of water.

Gram Unnati's Founder and CEO, Aneesh Jain, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are excited to collaborate with Bayer in delivering greater value to small-holder farmers in western Uttar Pradesh by providing them a level playing field. Through this partnership, we aim to empower small-holder farmers with access to advisory services, quality inputs, credit facilities, technologies, and market linkages. With our strong presence in these six districts and existing partnerships with IFC and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, we are already working towards converting 20,000 acres from summer paddy to spring maize. This collaboration with Bayer CropScience allows us to mobilize a larger number of farmers and provide them with the necessary technical expertise and product guidance."

Ajeet Chahal, Head of Commercial Key Accounts and Alternate Business Models at Bayer CropScience, shared his perspective on the partnership, stating, "At Bayer, we are dedicated to improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across India. This improvement involves providing them with timely advisory services and encouraging the adoption of good agricultural practices, thereby enabling them to secure better prices for their produce. However, no single company can address the challenges of 'access to solutions' alone. It requires the establishment of a larger ecosystem and meaningful collaborations throughout the agricultural value chain. Through our partnership with Gram Unnati, we aim to expand our reach to smallholder farmers and offer personalized solutions that enable them to achieve better and more sustainable harvests."

The MoU between Gram Unnati and Bayer signifies a significant step towards promoting sustainable agriculture in India. This partnership holds the potential to enhance the livelihoods of small-holder farmers in western Uttar Pradesh while concurrently conserving precious natural resources.

This collaboration exemplifies the power of combining expertise and resources to create a positive impact within the agricultural sector. With Gram Unnati's extensive network and Bayer's agricultural science solutions, the future of spring maize cultivation in western Uttar Pradesh appears promising, as it strives to empower farmers, increase yields, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
