Goa: Farmers Demand for Compensation, Gets First Installment for Canes

Recently the state government has distributed funding of Rs 3.7 crore to 282 farmers. This was the first installment of compensation under Special Assistance Scheme given to sugarcane farmers.

In anticipation of the shutdown of Dharbandora –based Sanjivani Sugar Factory in the year 2019, the government has declared to provide compensation over a 5-year period to more than 700 farmers.

Amongst this 282 recipients, majorly farmers were from Sanguem. There were other farmers based in Quepem, Pernem, and Dharbandora.

Factory administrator Satej Kamat stated that the government has approved the amount for payment, which has been deposited in their respective accounts. Also the remaining 20% compensation will be paid soon, he added.

The meeting which was conducted on 31 August 2021 was being concluded that farmers had expressed their views and demanded a suitable price charge. Government to consider the quality of sugarcane supplied by the farmers to the industries.

Around 47,069 tonnes of cane were distributed during 2017-18 . This was the peak production year with a higher range of profit.

Perni also mentioned in his statement that the “Government has completely supported and have paid the compensation irrespective of the quality and actual quantity being supplied to them.”
