Experts Evaluate Wheat Crop Loss In 5 Haryana Districts

A group of scientists from the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR) is collaborating with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, and other institutes to evaluate the damage caused by unexpected rainfall to the wheat crop.

They are currently examining the losses in five states, namely Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

Three scientific teams conducted field visits to assess the damage caused by rain on wheat crops. They have analyzed the lodging, waterlogging, and quality of the grain. The scientists are expected to submit their report soon.

According to Dr. Gyanendra Singh, the Director of ICAR-IIWBR, their team has already begun reviewing the situation in the fields to assess the extent of the damage.

"I can't comment on the extent of crop loss at this time," he added, "but only after receiving the scientists' report."

Dr. Anuj Kumar, Principal Scientist, IIWBR, said he would submit his report to the ICAR-IIWBR Director's office after visiting fields in Kaithal, Ambala, Yamuna nagar, Karnal, and Kurukshetra districts recently. "Due to the torrential rain, I found lodging in a variety of locations. In the fields, waterlogging has also been observed. We also met with farmers to assess the situation," Dr. Anuj said.

According to a scientist, wheat production in March-April 2022 was adversely affected by a sudden heatwave, which caused a decrease in the expected production from 112 million metric tonnes (MMT) to 106.84 MMT. This was lower than the 109.59 MMT produced in the previous year of 2020-21. The scientist had predicted that the current season would yield 112 MMT.
