Delhi Haat Hosts FPO Mela, Showcased Farmer Empowerment and Agricultural Advancements

In a significant collaborative effort, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Small Farmers Agri-Business Association (SFAC), and Common Service Centers (CSC) came together to organize a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) Mela at INA Market, Delhi Haat on Tuesday. This event aimed to highlight the impact of FPOs in promoting farmer empowerment and providing a platform for FPOs to display their products and services.

The FPO Mela featured the active participation of major FPOs from various corners of the country, showcasing a diverse range of agricultural products from more than 20 FPOs. Visitors had the unique opportunity to savor and experience the essence of natural and locally produced items, gaining a deeper appreciation for the quality and variety of these offerings.

Farmer Producer Organizations, or FPOs, are groups of farmers engaged in commercial activities related to farming and crop production within their respective regions. They play a crucial role in enhancing the rural economy by offering farmers discounted rates on essential agricultural inputs, including manure, seeds, fertilizers, and equipment. Additionally, FPOs assist farmers in marketing their produce, thereby increasing their income and improving their livelihoods.

Recognizing the significance of FPOs in supporting farmers and rural communities, the government has embarked on an initiative to establish FPOs in every block across the country. Presently, over 2,165 FPOs comprising 8 lakh farmers are actively conducting business through the online platform, ONDC.

Speaking at the event, Shri Sanjay Rakesh, Managing Director & CEO of CSC SPV, emphasized the organization's commitment to rural development. He highlighted the valuable role that CSCs play in providing various services to farmers, such as teleconsultation, crop insurance, e-veterinary services, Kisan Credit Cards, and the PM Kisan scheme. In addition, CSCs are actively involved in establishing FPOs nationwide, effectively empowering farmers and promoting their well-being.

CSCs, with their vast network in remote areas, offer citizens access to a range of government services at their doorstep, including caste certificates, income certificates, domicile certificates, character certificates, and employment registration. These services have played a pivotal role in enhancing e-governance and have positively impacted the lives of people across the country.

India is home to more than 12 crore small and marginal farmers, with an average landholding size of less than 1.1 hectares. These farmers require support in various stages of agricultural production, including technology, quality inputs, seed production, farm machinery, value-added products, processing, credit, investment, and access to markets. The formation of FPOs is an essential step in addressing these challenges and increasing farmers' income.

The FPO Mela held at Delhi Haat was a resounding success, providing a platform for FPOs to exhibit their wide range of products and services. It also served as an opportunity for farmers to learn about the benefits of joining FPOs and accessing their services. The government's commitment to promoting FPOs is a commendable effort that promises to empower farmers and drive economic growth in rural areas.
