In a remarkable move towards modernizing agriculture in India, Manoj Ahuja, the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW), has introduced an innovative mobile app and web portal for the General Crop Estimation Survey (GCES) in New Delhi.

The advanced technology promises to revolutionize the agricultural sector by providing real-time estimates and accurate precision. Emphasizing the pivotal role of data accuracy for dependable results, Ahuja has urged all states to adopt GCES for enhanced credibility.

Ruchika Gupta, an Adviser at DA&FW, has spotlighted the standout features of the portal and mobile app, meticulously crafted to enhance the potential of technology in the government development domain. The automation of the GCES process guarantees prompt reporting of crop statistics and a notable improvement in data accuracy. The responsible agencies for conducting Crop Cutting Experiments (CCE) across various states include revenue and agriculture departments, alongside directorates of economics and statistics.

Arun Kumar, a Senior Economic and Statistical Adviser, has illuminated the ongoing initiatives at DA&FW aims to boost data accuracy and digital data governance within the agricultural domain. He said the new initiative will provide a transformative era for agriculture, providing more precise and real-time monitoring of crop yields.

The key features of GCES and the mobile application have also been unveiled, offering a comprehensive repository of yield estimates, encompassing village-wise GCES plans and plot particulars where crop-cutting experiments transpire. Additionally, data on post-harvest crop weights and crop loss are integrated into the system. A standout feature is the incorporation of geo-referencing in the mobile app, enabling primary workers to delineate experimental plot boundaries and upload photos of both the plot and the crops, ensuring utmost data transparency and accuracy.

The challenges currently faced by the GCES web portal and mobile application, particularly the reporting delay attributed to manual data collection and yield estimation processes, have been addressed. The new system revolutionizes data collection, employing a GPS-enabled mobile application to swiftly store field data on a server, ensuring the timely reporting of crop statistics.

Sonia Sharma, an Additional Statistical Adviser at DA&FW, has presented the redesigned process flow of the General Crop Estimation Survey through the web portal and mobile application, which are presently in the pilot stage. These pilot projects are slated to roll out in 12 states by the third week of October 2023, marking a significant stride in the modernization of India's agricultural sector.
