Cyclone Mocha: Around May 6, Cyclonic Circulation is Most Likely Over the Bay of Bengal

On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that Cyclone 'Mocha' is expected to develop in the southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6, 2023. While it is uncertain at this point, there is a possibility that the West Bengal coast could be affected by the cyclone. At present, IMD predicts that there will be a low-pressure area, but there is a chance that it may intensify into a severe cyclone during the second week of May. 

In the regions of west-central and southern Bengal, there may be dispersed low and medium clouds that are fragmented, along with instances of strong to very strong thunderstorms embedded within them.

Although the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has not specified the probable path of the cyclonic circulation, experts are considering the likelihood of the West Bengal coast being impacted. This is particularly significant given that many cyclones originating in the area have been moving in that direction, as highlighted by a recent analysis conducted by the World Bank.

According to the IMD report, the current circumstances are favorable for the development of cyclones in the Bay of Bengal. This is because both the "heat potential" of tropical cyclones and the "sea surface temperature" across the entire Bay of Bengal has reached the optimum levels required for cyclone formation.

After the IMD announced a potential natural disaster, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of Odisha called for a high-level meeting to discuss preparedness measures. During the meeting, CM Patnaik suggested that all relevant departments, including NDRF, ODRAF, and fire services, should be on high alert and take necessary steps to evacuate people from vulnerable areas to designated storm shelters. 

He also stressed the importance of keeping all required equipment ready and developing advance plans for recovery and rehabilitation efforts after the storm.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister instructed the Chief Secretary to regularly review the cyclone situation, with a focus on the guiding principle of 'Every Life Values.' Additionally, he directed the Special Relief Commissioner to closely monitor the situation and coordinate efforts with all departments.
