CNH Industrial and UPES Collaborate to Promote Innovation in Farm Machinery Design
UPES students gain valuable experience in farm machinery design during a 10-week program. The winning team, with their 'Coco Harvest' concept, earns a visit to New Holland Agriculture's Greater Noida plant.
CNH Industrial India, a prominent global figure in the agriculture and construction equipment sectors, has announced the winners of its inventive Industrial Design Program. In collaboration with UPES, a versatile and interdisciplinary university situated in Dehradun, this joint effort has emerged as a fertile ground for exceptional talent.
The winning team, consisting of Abhijith MS, Arvind M, and Vrushadwaj Gunjari, under the mentorship of Lavendra Shukla, emerged victorious with their groundbreaking 'Coco Harvest' concept.
This program was a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) forged between CNH and UPES, reflecting their shared commitment to improving creativity and innovation among aspiring students. The primary objective was to channel the innovative potential of these young minds toward finding ingenious solutions in the domain of farm machinery.
The collaboration between CNH and UPES encompassed a broad spectrum of cooperative efforts. It included extensive research, academic exchanges, workshops, joint projects, seminars, and intern co-supervision, highlighting the commitment of both institutions to learning and innovation.

Ashish Sharma, the Leader of India Technology Center at CNH, expressed immense satisfaction in celebrating the exceptional accomplishments of the winners in the Industrial Design Program. He highlighted the program's transformative impact on the students, igniting their innovation and creativity. Sharma also reaffirmed CNH's dedication to initiatives that empower and boost the next generation of designers.
Over 10 weeks, 20 students were divided into five groups for an intensive program. They tackled real-world projects that gave them practical experience and a profound understanding of designing and developing farm machinery. The program focused on essential skills like research, idea generation, design, finding materials, building prototypes, and manufacturing.
To enhance the student's learning experience, CNH's experienced team visited UPES, offering guidance and addressing their design-related queries. The individual projects underwent rigorous evaluation by both UPES and CNH, with a focus on creativity, innovation, and the overall quality of the design solutions.
David Wilkie, the Head of Industrial Design for CNH, expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with the students and witnessing their remarkable research and design creativity. The students demonstrated a keen interest in enhancing fruit harvesting processes, proof of problem-solving skills, and innovative thinking.
He highlighted the pivotal role of industrial designers in simplifying tasks, making them faster and safer. The initiative has also boosted their ideas extended to harvesting a variety of fruits, including coconuts, pineapples, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and even mangoes.
Phani Tetali, the Dean of the School of Design (SOD) at UPES, expressed his delight in collaborating with CNH Industrial. He said that the partnership not only offers students an opportunity to showcase their talents but also grants them valuable guidance from experienced professionals at CNH. He further emphasized that this collaboration would play a pivotal role in supporting the development of young talent in India, especially in enhancing the academic journey of students.
