In an effort to uplift the agricultural sector and provide crucial support to farmers, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma flagged off the Prime Agriculture Response Vehicles at Upper Shillong on Thursday. The Chief Minister commended the agriculture department for its significant progress in recent years, incorporating advanced technology and enhanced infrastructure, which has facilitated a structured growth framework and a robust support system for farmers, ultimately leading to increased income.

Acknowledging that approximately 80 percent of Meghalaya's population relies on farming, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the paramount importance of supporting farmers and unveiled numerous government initiatives aimed at bolstering the agricultural sector. He highlighted the employment potential within the agriculture and food sectors, revealing that around 50,000 youth enter the job market annually in the state. While roughly 3,000 are absorbed into the government sector, the remaining individuals seek opportunities in the private sector.

Recognizing agriculture, food processing, tourism, and the service sector as key areas for employment, Chief Minister Sangma stressed the need for a vibrant private sector to absorb the burgeoning workforce. He emphasized that creating a favorable environment within the state is crucial for private sector growth. Sangma underscored the pivotal role of agriculture and food processing in generating economic benefits and employment opportunities, ensuring a sustainable future for the people of Meghalaya.

Chief Minister Sangma announced that an additional fleet of 200 Prime Agriculture Response Vehicles will be distributed in the next phase, further enhancing support for the farming community. Under the Prime Agri Response Vehicles program, 200 vehicles will be provided to cooperative societies, Self Help Groups, Farmers Producer Organizations, and individuals, with a 50 percent subsidy on the on-road cost of the vehicles.

During the launch event, twenty Prime Agri Response Vehicles were flagged off, with keys handed over to various Integrated Village Cooperative Societies from the Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions. These vehicles serve the purpose of connecting remote rural communities, bridging transportation gaps, and providing livelihood opportunities to individuals residing in far-flung areas.
