Bengal Rice Mills’ Association Exhorts Meeting With CM Mamata
The association's seven issues include pollution control, high power tariffs, and demand for solar energy services, among others.
Abdul Malek, acting president of the Bengal Rice Mills Association, has written to chief minister Mamata Banerjee seeking a meeting to discuss several issues concerning rice milling and the agricultural industry.
"Our state is the largest producer of paddy, with an average production of 2,600 kg per hectare, and rice is the main agricultural crop. Rice millers in our state are involved in the procurement of approximately 55 lakh metric tonnes of paddy, which enables the implementation of your government's two most successful programs, Khadya Sathi and Duare Ration. I would like to draw your attention to the following issues for your immediate intervention and resolution," Malek wrote in his letter.
The association's seven issues include pollution control, high power tariffs, and demand for solar energy services, among others.
He also mentioned in his letter that controlling pollution in rice mills has become extremely difficult, particularly in the handling of ash. Through government intervention, the association seeks the expertise of IIT, NIT, Jadavpur University, and IIEST to develop technology that can be converted into a value-added product.
Furthermore, Malek requested that the WBSEDCL power tariff be brought in line with DVC because the WBSEDCL electricity tariff is high, which has increased utility costs and caused the industry to lose its competitive edge.
The imposition of a 20% export duty on raw rice has had a negative impact on the farming of aromatic rice (Gobindobhog). Malek has also asked the chief minister to raise this issue with the central government in order to resolve it as soon as possible.
