In a significant development, Bayer, a global leader in agriculture and healthcare, has announced the retirement of D Narain, a stalwart with over 25 years of dedicated service. Narain, who currently holds the positions of President of Bayer South Asia, Vice Chairman, Managing Director & CEO of Bayer CropScience Limited (BCSL), and the Global Head of Smallholder Farming for Bayer, will bring his tenure with the company to a close by the conclusion of November 2023.

D Narain's illustrious career has left an indelible mark on the agricultural landscape, spanning nearly three and a half decades. He has been a driving force in innovative solutions that uplift smallholder farmers worldwide. His vision and dedication have been instrumental in establishing the global smallholder business as a cornerstone of the company's long-term growth strategy. With an unwavering commitment to enhancing smallholder incomes and livelihoods, Narain's efforts have created a lasting impact.

One of Narain's notable accomplishments has been his pioneering role in introducing financing and risk management models that have benefited farmers across the globe. His leadership has been especially evident in his recent stewardship of the successful integration of Monsanto, which has propelled Bayer South Asia to become one of the company's fastest-growing regions. Additionally, Narain has transformed the region into a global talent hub and expanded 'Centres of Excellence' to provide crucial support to various global teams.

Stepping into the shoes of this esteemed leader is Simon-Thorsten Wiebusch, who will assume the roles of President, Bayer South Asia, and Vice Chairman, Managing Director & CEO of Bayer CropScience Ltd (BCSL) starting November 1, 2023. Simon brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record within Bayer.

Currently serving as the Country Division Head (CDH) of the India, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka (IBSL) cluster in Crop Science, Simon has demonstrated exceptional leadership since his move to India in December 2018. He partnered closely with Narain to fortify the IBSL cluster's status as a robust growth engine for smallholders. Subsequently, he took on the role of CDH in 2022, cementing his commitment to advancing the company's mission.

Simon's journey within Bayer commenced in 1998 at the company's headquarters in Germany. Throughout his career, he has gained valuable insights by working across various divisions and geographies, including Germany, Eastern Europe, and Asia. Prior to his current position in India, he served as the Chief Executive Officer for Bayer's Crop Science Division in South-East Asia.

As the torch passes from Narain to Simon, Bayer affirms its commitment to maintaining a seamless transition. Over the upcoming months, Narain will collaborate with his successors in India and Germany to ensure a smooth handover before embarking on his retirement. Narain will remain engaged with Bayer even post-retirement, contributing his expertise to expand partnerships and foster thought leadership initiatives. These endeavours will continue to centre around the core objective of enhancing smallholder incomes and promoting sustainability.

The transition not only marks the changing of the guard but also underscores Bayer's enduring dedication to driving innovation, fostering growth, and championing the welfare of smallholder farmers across the globe. With Narain's legacy as a guiding light and Simon's proven leadership, the future holds promise for Bayer's continued success in the agricultural domain.
