Agartala Launches Direct Procurement of 35,000 MT Paddy from Farmers to Support Food Security

In a significant move to support farmers and enhance food security, the Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Sushanta Chowdhury, officially launched the direct procurement of 35,000 metric tonnes of paddy from farmers at a ceremony held in Agartala. With the BJP-led government's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of farmers, this initiative aims to strengthen the public distribution system and provide a fair and transparent platform for farmers to sell their produce.

Highlighting the paramount importance of protecting the welfare of farmers, Minister Chowdhury underscored the government's commitment to procuring paddy through the Food Corporation of India (FCI). In line with this effort, the government has set a target to directly purchase 35,000 metric tonnes of paddy from farmers during the current rabi season, offering a minimum support price of Rs 20.4 per kg.

To facilitate the process, the government has designated 40 centers across the state where farmers can sell their paddy. Farmers can contact the nearest agriculture department office or sub-divisional magistrate's office (food department) to sell their produce conveniently.

Minister Chowdhury explained that the purchase of paddy each season serves the dual purpose of augmenting the stock of foodgrains in the country and regulating market prices. He emphasized that specific purchase instructions have been issued to each district and sub-division this year to ensure the achievement of these objectives.

In order to safeguard the interests of farmers, Minister Chowdhury urged officials to ensure that no harassment occurs during the paddy-selling process. He directed them to closely monitor the situation and take necessary steps to prevent farmers from being coerced into selling their paddy below the minimum support price.

This direct procurement initiative not only provides a fair and transparent system for farmers to sell their produce but also contributes to the overall food security of the region. It enables the government to maintain adequate stockpiles of food grains while ensuring that farmers receive a fair price for their hard work.
