The insurance period should ideally be from sowing to crop maturity. The insurance period is determined by the duration of the crop and weather parameters selected, which may vary with individual crops and reference unit areas and will be communicated by the State Level Coordination Committee on Crop Insurance (SLCCCI) prior to the start of the risk period.

Area and crop selection

The State Level Coordination Committee on Crop Insurance (SLCCCI) will choose the areas and crops based on factors such as historical weather data availability, minimum cropped area, and weather perils capable of causing significant and quantifiable losses due to changes in measurable weather parameters.

  • Before the SLCCCI meeting, the State Government holds meetings with insurance providers and agro-meteorology experts from State Agriculture Universities and Research Institutes to finalize triggers, term sheets, and payout.
  • The Government will appoint a Technical Committee to carry out the following tasks:
  • Crop selection, area, and weather triggers
  • Review of proposals received from the Insurance Company
  • Finalization of term sheets for the proposed crop or area based on historical weather and yield data correlation.

In selected notified areas, the Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme will operate under the "Area Approach" principle. As a result, the State Government will notify the smallest insurance units possible, which should be preferred, the Village Panchayat, Revenue Circle, Mandal, Hobli, Block, and Tehsil.
