Success Story- How New Seed Varieties Revolutionized a Farmer's Yield?
In this article, we have discussed how a farmer using a new seed variety changed the living standards and contributed to farm income.
Bant Singh, a forward-thinking farmer from Bibipur village in Punjab's Mohali district, has achieved remarkable success and received accolades for his contributions to agriculture. Initially facing numerous setbacks due to purchasing unsuitable seeds from local sellers, Bant Singh recognized the need for a change to avoid seed scams and improve his yields. Through attending a training session organized by the local agricultural department and visiting the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), he discovered the potential of new seed varieties and decided to take a chance.
With 5 acres of land under his care, Bant Singh embraced the use of hybrid varieties and witnessed a significant transformation in his crop yields and profits. His previous wheat production, which yielded 23 quintals/acre (Rs. 48,000), was surpassed by the introduction of the PBW 826 wheat variety, resulting in a remarkable production of 28 quintals/acre (Rs. 60,000). Similarly, Bant Singh's sugarcane cultivation flourished with the adoption of CoPb 95 (CoPb 16211) and CoPb 98 (CoPb 14185), leading to a substantial increase in production from 380 quintals/acre (Rs. 1,45,000) to an impressive 420 quintals/acre (Rs. 1,60,000).
In addition to the utilization of innovative seed varieties, Bant Singh's integration of livestock into his farming practices has played a pivotal role in his achievements. Owning 8 buffaloes and 2 cows, he relies on them for personal consumption as well as a source of income. Furthermore, Bant Singh understands the importance of sustainable farming methods and utilizes the manure from his livestock as organic fertilizer, benefitting both the crops and the overall health of the soil and environment.
