Soil Moisture And Its Smart Tools
Soil moisture is an essential factor describing the conditions and growth of the plant. It is the most important factor on which plant growth is completely dependent. In this article, we have discussed different smart tools required to monitor soil moisture content.
Soil Moisture is the water content present in soil pores. It plays an essential role in enhancing plant growth. If there is an overabundance of moisture or water then it may lead to destroying the plants, other side if there is less amount of water then the plant may die.
Therefore it is important to keep an eye check on this moisture content. There are certainly other factors like weather parameters, temperature, climate, and many more which decide the presence of moisture content in the soil.
The following are different tools that analyze and monitor the moisture content in the soil:-
1. Tensiometers
They are cylindrical tubes filled with water. Their main objective is to measure and analyze the water stress levels underground, at different depths of the soil. Tensiometer can help to monitor the soil conditions, therefore, alerting and circulating the information to the user or grower. One limitation that the tensiometer provides is to provide top-quality maintenance to them.
2. Electrical resistance block or Gypsum block
This tool is labile therefore it should be handled carefully. The tool is used to cover a broad range of work. They measure the electrical resistance between two electrodes which are buried deep inside the soil.
Some blocks have electrodes mounted with fiberglass or in meta-encased blocks filled with sand or gypsum.
3. Time Domain Reflectometry(TDR)
It is a smart tool that sends electrical signals to the ground and measures the wave received. This helps to analyze the condition of the soil. If the land is too dry then fast waves will be received.TDR helps to rectify the areas where moisture and water content are inaccurate. The user needs to have proficient skills to understand the interpretations and information obtained.
4. Remote Sensing Platforms
This smart tool allows the user to obtain separate moisture content for the root zone and shoot zone.EOSDA Crop Monitoring is one such platform that helps to monitor and analyze the soil conditions, and required moisture content and assess soil moisture importance for obtaining quality crops.
