A GI tag provides legal protection to the product and its producers from unauthorized use, imitation, or exploitation. It also helps in promoting and marketing the product, boosting the local economy, and preserving the cultural heritage of the region.
Ladakh wood carving is a traditional craft that has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. It is a vital aspect of the local economy and cultural identity of the region. The GI tag recognizes the unique qualities and characteristics of Ladakhi wood carving, such as its intricate designs, exquisite craftsmanship, and use of locally available softwood.
The grant of the GI tag for Ladakh wood carving is a significant achievement for the local artisans and the region's economy. It will help in preserving and promote the traditional craft, providing legal protection to the local artisans from imitation and exploitation.
