National Horticulture Mission

The National Horticulture Board is implementing the National Horticulture Mission (NHM), a sub-scheme of the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH). The objective was primarily created to support the expansion of the horticultural industry, which includes cashew, cocoa, flowers, mushrooms, spices, and root and tuber crops.

For this mission, the State Government will provide 15% while the Government of India (GOI) would contribute 85% of the funding for the development programmes. The National Horticulture Mission is thoroughly examined in this article.

Objectives of the National Horticulture Mission

The National Horticulture Mission's primary goals are as follows:

  • Increasing the horticulture industry's growth through research, technological promotion, and post-harvest management, processing, and marketing, among other things.
  • To boost nutritional security, increase horticultural production, and quadruple farmer income.
  • To create a convergence between several ongoing and upcoming programmes for horticulture development.
  • Advancing and developing technology by integrating old and contemporary scientific knowledge.
  • To open up employment prospects, particularly for young people who lack skills or training.

Strategy of the National Horticulture Mission

To accomplish the aforementioned goals, the mission would employ the following strategies:

  • Encouraging the development of new production, post-harvest, and processing technologies.
  • Ensuring complete assistance for cultivation, post-harvest administration, marketing, and processing to ensure producers receive fair returns.
  • Increasing production by switching from conventional crops to plantations.
  • Provide farmers with the necessary technology for high-tech horticulture farming and cultivation.
  • Assisting in the construction of post-harvest facilities for marketing infrastructure and value addition, such as ripening chambers, packhouses, cold storages, controlled atmosphere storages, etc.
  • Promoting partnerships, processing, and marketing organizations in the public and commercial sectors, at the national, state, and district levels.
  • The State Government may hire firms to help with SHMD and AAP preparation. The State Horticulture Mission will then draught a plan for the state, get it approved by the State Executive Committee (SEC), and have the National Executive Committee deliver copies of it to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).
  • The SHM may use up to 5% of its annual budget to create the SHM and Annual Plans. The Annual Action Plan can address the concerns regarding horticulture development that relate to production, post-harvest management, and marketing. The Annual Action Plan should be submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture under the established standards.
  • As submitted to the National Level EC signaling approval by SLEC, the SHM will upload the AAP.
