Mizo Farmers Follow Protected Off-Season Tomato Cultivation: Increases Profitability in Unpredictable Weather Conditions

However, a new initiative introduced by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Mizoram Centre, has brought about a significant change in the lives of Mizo farmers.

Recognizing the need for sustainable farming practices, the ICAR Research Complex initiated a project focused on off-season tomato cultivation under protected environments. This approach aimed to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions and enhance crop productivity, leading to improved livelihoods for farmers.
Implementation of Protected Cultivation:
Sixteen farmers from different districts of Mizoram were selected to participate in the project. With the support of Krishi Vigyan Kendras and other agricultural agencies, these farmers embarked on a journey to explore the potential of protected tomato cultivation. They were provided with training, technical guidance, and necessary resources to establish polyhouses for growing high-yielding tomato varieties resistant to common diseases.

One such farmer, Pu Thanmawia, stood out with his exceptional success in protected tomato cultivation. His impressive yields inspired neighbouring farmers to adopt similar practices. One of the notable success stories is that of Pu Laltlanzova from Siphir, Aizawl. Encouraged by the success of his neighbour, Pu Thangkima, Pu Laltlanzova ventured into protected tomato cultivation with support from the Tribal Sub Plan scheme. Despite initial apprehensions, he embraced the technology and witnessed a significant improvement in his tomato yields over the years.
