Biradhar Veer Shetty, hailing from Gangapur village in Telangana’s district, faced severe problems while traveling to Beed 2006, a small region in Maharashtra. From being a driver to running a business with a turnover of Rs 1 Cr annually here is the most inspiring story of Millet Man of Telangana.
When he had experienced hunger in Beed and there was no access to such food which could satisfy his craving, from there his journey of bringing innovative ideas began. His target was to help the people of Beed. His aim was to create ideas that could lead to sustainable agriculture.
After returning from Maharashtra Veer choose millet as the primary crop. The main reason was millets required less amount of water as compared to other crops. Moreover, millets were more beneficial providing additional nutrients to the human diet.
As Veer had a farming background therefore it helped him with this initiative. As his work helped him to lead further, he got the opportunity to work as an assistant to Dr. C H Ravindra Reddy, principal scientist at International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).
In the seven years of his business, under the name of S S Bhavani Food Pvt Ltd., his firm had developed 60 value-added millet products from various millets like foxtail, finger, sorghum, and many others. Therefore a successful entrepreneur who opened his food processing plants and generated millet-based ready-to-eat edible food.
For his excellent work, he also received the title of “Best Farmer Award” from the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF). He also received the Dr. M V Rao Memorial Award from professor Jayashankar, Telangana State Agricultural University in 2017.
Talking about his title “ Millet Man Of Telangana ” he told that “it is a title that he achieved after working and learning from the people he had been working from the last two decades, therefore he was truly grateful for so much affection. He says “ it was his most cherished recognition to date.”
