The genesis of the Oja tractor range can be traced back to 2018 when a team of 50 engineers from Mahindra's Farm Equipment Business embarked on a transformative mission in Japan. This venture came three years after Mahindra acquired a 33 percent stake in Mitsubishi Agriculture Machinery (MAM). The Indian R&D team, in partnership with MAM, embarked on developing a modern, versatile, and lightweight tractor architecture catering to global markets.

What set this endeavor apart was not just technological innovation but a unique fusion of cultures. Indian engineers working on the K2 project in Japan immersed themselves in Japanese best practices, from participating in the Sakura Hanami cherry blossom festival to engaging in football matches and drum parades. They even embarked on treks with their Japanese counterparts. This cultural exchange laid the foundation for a robust collaboration that would go on to redefine the global tractor market.

To ensure that Oja met the diverse needs of global farmers, Indian and Japanese engineers embarked on a globe-trotting mission. They visited farms and spent time with local farmers in regions as varied as the Americas, Africa, ASEAN, Australia, and Europe. This firsthand experience provided invaluable insights into the usage of lightweight tractors in different parts of the world.

The culmination of this extensive research and development effort occurred five years later in Cape Town, South Africa, with the birth of Oja - Mahindra's latest global tractor range.

Mahindra's Globalization Strategy

While Mahindra has dominated the Indian tractor market, a significant portion of its revenue historically came from India. However, the company adopted a strategic approach to global expansion in the mid-2010s. After 2014-2015, Mahindra embarked on a series of mergers and acquisitions, acquiring companies in Europe and Japan, including Mitsubishi Agricultural Machinery in Japan, Erkunt Tractors in Turkey, and Sampo Rosenlew in Finland. This move expanded the company's portfolio to include mechanized farming equipment.

Mahindra's global expansion strategy has followed two tracks. First, it serves global markets from India's cost-effective base, and second, it establishes local presence in major markets like the United States, Turkey, and Brazil.

In Japan, the team of engineers from India and Japan continued to brainstorm, ultimately giving birth to Oja. After 60 months of intense market research and a significant investment, Oja was introduced as a game-changer for Mahindra's international plans.

Hemant Sikka, President of Farm Equipment Business at Mahindra & Mahindra, stated that Oja is set to lead the doubling of export volumes to 36,000 units in three years. This move signifies a strategic shift for Mahindra, as it aims to grow its exports significantly.

Oja's Versatile Offerings

Oja is a family of four platforms, ranging from sub-compact to large utility tractors, with various engine and transmission options. Weighing between 700-2,050 kg, Oja tractors boast high precision hydraulics, standard 4WD capabilities, and automation controls that enhance precision. This versatility makes Oja suitable for a wide range of applications, from orchards to paddy farms.

To cater to different markets, Oja tractors will be marketed with three advanced technology-based feature packs: PROJA, MYOJA, and ROBOJA.

A Global Outlook for Oja

Mahindra's strategic rollout plan for Oja is ambitious. After its debut in India, the Oja range will be launched in North America, ASEAN, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Europe, and the SAARC regions. This expansion opens up vast market potential in various regions.

Mahindra is targeting a 25 percent share of the global lightweight tractor industry with Oja, which translates to nearly 1 million units. The company has ambitious goals in markets like Thailand and Brazil, aiming for significant market shares. In Europe, the focus will be on France, Italy, Germany, the UK, and Spain, which together account for a substantial portion of tractor sales.

Pushing Boundaries in India

Despite its global ambitions, Mahindra remains committed to its home market, India. The company aims to grow its market share in the lightweight tractor segment by 10 percentage points. Oja's focus on the 20-to-40 horsepower band is expected to bolster its presence in the fast-growing horticulture and paddy farming segments.

Mahindra's expansion doesn't stop with product development. The company plans to increase its presence from 1,100 to 1,300 points in two years, ensuring it remains at the forefront of India's dynamic tractor market.

In addition to its diesel engine offerings, Mahindra has designed Oja with the possibility of adopting zero-emission powertrains in the future, aligning with global trends toward sustainability.
