Artificial Lighting In Agriculture -The New Age Advanced Technique
Artificial Lighting plays an important role in fulfilling the increasing food demand with rapid population growth. In this article, we have discussed different techniques replacing sunlight to grow the crops.
Agriculture plays a pivotal role in the Indian economy. To meet the food demand of the growing population, a correct solution is a must to control these difficult times. Though farming has tackled the overall food scarcity yet it is not the ultimate solution to render the situation.
Moreover unpredictable climatic conditions have created a huge impact on crop growth, which has resulted in disease infestations, the vulnerability of crops to pest attacks, and many other problems.
Therefore to enhance and curtail these problematic situations artificial lighting has been introduced. They are a cost-effective technique to grow food, thus meeting the food demands of the current growing population.
Growing Crops in a Controlled Environment
Controlled Environment Agriculture is an advanced technique , a hydroponically based agriculture where crops are grown in a controlled environment. They demand sound knowledge, horticulture, engineering, plant physiology, plant pathology, and many more.
It is an urban farming method where humidity, light, temperature, etc are controlled. They are usually practiced in vertical farms and greenhouses. Greenhouse persists natural lighting whereas vertical farms consist of artificial lighting. Therefore CEA is a good method to obtain good quality crops saving several resources.
Farming Without Sunlight
In this process, the artificial technique is being practiced without the use of sunlight. It is usually done through hydroponics, aeroponics, or using container gardens. The artificial light is provided by grow lamps or daylighting systems. With modifications in technology LED Lights have been replaced by efficient bulbs. Best applications have been done through pink lights which are a combination of red and blue LED Lights. Thorough research has shown that crops require a wavelength of blue and red color for proper growth.
Therefore the application of artificial lights has encouraged farmers to procure good-quality crops. A cost-effective system helps increase crop yield, increase profits, and helps to improve farmers' standard of living.
