Aquaponics- Here Is Everything You Need To Start Aquaponic System

Have you ever considered starting a garden? Do you grow, harvest, and consume the organic food you produce? If you've been inspired to grow your food using aquaponics, your next question is, "How do I build a simple aquaponics system at home?" Aquaponics- Here Is Everything You Need To Start Aquaponic System

Have you ever considered starting a garden? Do you grow, harvest, and consume the organic food you produce? If you've been inspired to grow your food using aquaponics, your next question is, "How do I build a simple aquaponics system at home?" This ultimate aquaponics beginner's guide will serve as an overview, providing you with all of the information you'll need to get started.

How Aquaponics Works?

Aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics are combined in aquaponics (growing plants in a nutrient solution). Aquaponics systems involve the cultivation of plants as well as the rearing of fish with the assistance of beneficial bacteria. These components combine to form an effective aquaponics system. You can grow organic food with aquaponics in a self-sustaining garden with limited space and resources.

What materials are required for aquaponics?

To get started with an aquaponics system, you'll need some supplies. Naturally, some setups necessitate fewer supplies and materials than others. In this article, I'll go over the equipment you'll need to get started with aquaponics.

In a gist, you will require:

  • A fishpond
  • A growing area
  • Develop media
  • Pump for water
  • Air stones in an air pump
  • Fittings for PVC piping
  • Bulkheads and/or Uniseals
  • Your choice of siphon
  • Rockwool seedling cubes
  • A tray for starting seeds
  • Kit for testing water
  • TDS or EC meter

Space Available

The first consideration in Aquaponics is determining the best and most efficient location. Location is everything in aquaponics, just like it is in real estate. You're looking for a location that has the following features:

  • Natural sunlight is available.
  • Possibility of constructing a greenhouse
  • Is readily available
  • Is there electricity and a water supply nearby?

Aquariums for fish

Your fish tank is the heart of your system; aquaponics is impossible without one. When it comes to building or purchasing a fish tank, you have several options.

Planting beds

Your grow bed is the next most important item. This is where the plants are. The height of your grow bed should be 15 inches. 12 inches should be submerged in water, with one inch on top to weigh down the media and keep algae at bay. Grow beds can be made out of any material that can hold water and is strong enough to support the growing media.

Grow media

Grow media is used to keep the plants in place. It also serves as a habitat for nitrifying bacteria, which convert ammonia to nitrates.

Pump for Water

Before purchasing a pump, you should think about its head height. A pump rated for 400 gallons per hour, for example, can only pump 250 gallons per hour if the water must be lifted 4 feet to reach the grow beds. Your fish tank's water should be cycled at least once an hour.

Air pump and air stones

The air pump is another important item on the list. To provide oxygen to the fish, an air pump is required. The air pump should be placed close to your fish tank in a well-ventilated area. To increase its lifespan, it should ideally be protected from the elements (rain, snow, wind).

PVC Piping

PVC piping is required to transport water from your fish tank to your grow bed (s). You'll also need PVC piping for your SLO (solids lifting overflow). I recommend 2 inches for your solids lifting overflow and 3 inches for all other piping.

Bulkheads or Uniseals

To connect your system to your containers, you'll need some Uniseals or bulkheads. A bulkhead can only be used on flat surfaces, such as the grow bed’s bottom. A bulkhead is more durable but more expensive.

Siphon Bell

Siphons are used in grow beds to create the flood and drain cycle. When the water reaches the top, the siphon will activate and suck up the water faster than the water enters the grow bed.

Tray for Starting Seeds

When germinating seeds, you may need to use a seed starting tray to keep the humidity high. You don't have to buy it because you can use any container you have at home.

Kit for Water Testing

This is necessary for any aquaponics setup, large or small. The following water parameters will be tested by the water testing kit:

  • PH ranges from 6 to 8.8.
  • Ammonia
  • Nitrite
  • Nitrate

EC Meter

The electrical conductivity of water is measured using an EC meter. TDS, or total dissolved salts, is another name for it. The amount of solids in your source water is measured by this meter. If the PPM is greater than 200, you should find another source because it contains many minerals (hard water).
