A Successful Guide to Growing Garlic in Pots
To add flavor to your home garden, growing garlic in pots is a very easier and more suitable choice. Growing garlic in pots will not only add flavor to the dishes but their different health benefits will be worth adding extra productivity into your pots.
Growing garlic in pots is a rewarding endeavor that yields flavorful bulbs with proper maintenance and care. Planting individual garlic cloves with the pointed end facing up, ensures they are covered with soil but not buried too deep. Materials Required
The following are different materials that are required to grow garlic in pots:-
- Terracotta Pot, depth of 10 inches, and well-drained holes
- Quality Garlic bulbs (Cloves)
- Soil mixture-3:1 ratio

The following is the step-by-step guidance to grow garlic in pots:-
Select a suitable pot
Choose a pot that is at least 8-10 inches deep and has good drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Cloves should be separated from a bulb and planted 4-6 cm apart. Garlic clove should be pointed upwards, this ensures proper growth.
Choosing the right garlic variety
There are two main types of garlic - hardneck, and softneck. Softneck varieties are better suited for growing in pots due to their compact size and adaptability.
Prepare the potting mix
Garlic prefers well-draining soil. Create a mix using equal parts potting soil, compost, and perlite or vermiculite to improve drainage. Cloves should be pushed at least 5 inches deep into the soil.
Watering
Water the pot when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering, as garlic bulbs can rot in waterlogged soil.
Sunlight
Place the pot in a sunny location where it receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. If sunlight is limited, use growth lights to supplement.

Fertilization
Garlic plants benefit from occasional fertilization. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer according to the package instructions, usually once every 4-6 weeks.
Mulching
After planting, mulch the surface of the soil with straw or shredded leaves to retain moisture, suppress weed growth, and regulate soil temperature.
Pest and disease control
Monitor your plants for pests like aphids or onion maggots. If necessary, use organic pest control methods or consult with a local garden center for suitable solutions.
Harvesting
Garlic bulbs are typically ready for harvest when the leaves turn yellow and start drying out. Using a garden fork easily take the bulbs out, taking care not to damage them. To harvest the soil should be loosened using a tiller or using a hoe.
Curing and storing
After harvesting, gently brush off excess soil and allow the bulbs to dry in a well-ventilated area for 2-3 weeks. Garlic can be stored in vinegar or oil. Dried garlic can be stored garlic in a cool, dry place for long-term storage.
