Some claim that this is good for drying hay; however, research has shown that hay bales made at 16 to 18 percent moisture with low-density centers have no drying advantage. When feeding smaller animals, hay bales with less dense centers may be advantageous because they have less difficulty tearing the lower-density center of the bale apart when eating at a feeder.

Most variable balers would not bale in wet forage conditions until recently due to gumming on the belts. This was less of an issue with fixed chamber balers. In wet conditions, newer variable chamber balers are designed to reduce gumming on belts and bale chamber-forming rolls.

A variety of grasses can be baled into bundles, and the different types of crops must be handled differently due to differences in moisture and compression levels, among other things. For crops that require more moisture, a fixed-chamber round baler is probably best, whereas drier crops require something to compress everything more tightly, so a variable-chamber style is probably best.

Horsepower

Another thing to consider is whether the hay baler you want is compatible with your tractor. This will most likely entail checking the required horsepower and ensuring that your primary machine is up to the task.
Keep in mind that square balers often require more horsepower than round balers, so give those models special consideration when weighing your options.

Combine Baler And Tractor

Consider the size and power of the tractor when purchasing a baler. The tractor horsepower required for baling is determined by the baler size, whether the fields are level or sloped, the desired baling speed, whether hay or baleage is being produced, and whether a bale accumulator is included in the package. Consider the size of your tractor, as well as the front axle and tire weight capacity, when transporting bales, especially if you intend to transport more than one bale on a front-end loader.
