Tractor News has compiled a list of 5 key factors to consider when setting up and operating your tillers to assist you in mastering it.

Blade Diameter

The first factor to consider when determining your disc's tillage depth is blade diameter. Experts have discovered over the years that the ideal cutting depth in normal operating conditions is approximately 25% of the blade diameter. The cutting depth of a 32′′ blade, for example, is approximately 8′′. However, the cutting depth for a 26′′ blade is approximately 6.5′′.

Set your disc to the optimal tillage depth using the depth controls once you've calculated it.

Weight Per Blade 

The weight per blade is calculated by dividing the disc's weight by the number of blades. Measure the depth of the blade furrow after a short test pass in an area similar to where you'll be tilling. There is too much weight on the blade if the furrow is deeper than one-quarter of the blade's diameter. Reduce the tillage depth using the depth controls to relieve the pressure. Increase the pressure by increasing the tillage depth if it is too shallow.

The Angle of the Blade

Blade angle, like blade weight, influences tillage depth, setting the blades at a sharp angle increases blade penetration while setting them at a shallow angle decreases penetration.

Consider adjusting the blade angle as you make adjustments to account for weight per blade. Continue to make adjustments and test passes until the disc furrow measures one-quarter of the blade diameter.

Speed

The optimal operating speed in most conditions is 4-6 miles per hour. Discs can travel up to 8 miles per hour on sandier soils. If you're not sure what speed is best for your soil, make a few tests passes at various speeds and measure the furrow depth.

Soil Conditions 

Soil conditions can have a significant impact on tillage depth. The disc may sink into sandy soil, causing the blades to cut too deeply. Tough, chunky "gumbo" soil may prevent your disc from penetrating properly. If this is the case, additional passes may be required.

During the setup phase, you should get a good feel for the soil condition you'll be working in and be able to make the necessary adjustments. Just keep an eye out for changing soil conditions as you till—if you notice one, check the depth of your furrows and make adjustments as needed.
